Design and Technology

Middleton Marble Run Challenge - STEM day

Design Technology is, in its purest form, a beautiful process. From inspiration to conception, then development, building, tweaking and finally, evaluating – it is a full, complete and satisfying process.

Last Friday our pupils engaged in the Middleton Marble Run Challenge!

Children were given the task to design and make a marble run in a small group to meet the following design criteria:

The Brief

Puffins - To design and make a marble run that lasts more than 5 seconds.

Kingfishers - To design and make a marble run that incorporates a lever.

Owls – To design and make a marble run that incorporates a pneumatic pump.

Falcons – To design and make a marble run that triggers a buzzer or a bulb.

Pupils worked in groups and learnt to work together and compromise on their design ideas. The concepts were varied and wonderfully creative. When building they had to help each other to construct a stable structure before adding various tubes and channels for the marble to travel along.

There were many moments where pupils had to rework ideas, often adapting designs, until they finally came up with a working solution – not unlike the story of James Dyson!
